A Clean Start
Starting with the vines, the winemakers at Papkuilsfontein try to add as little as possible to the wine they produce. According to viticulturist Bennie Liebenberg, that means steering clear of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers or synthetic chemicals of any kind. Additional eco-sustainable principles used on the farm include destroying invasive plants using eat and relying on birds of prey to keep rodents in check.
Abundance in a Bottle
A bottle of Earthbound Wine is the legacy of the land produced organically from start to finish. All the winemaking qualities of a region growing in stature as a global contributor of quality wines are contained within the final product that carries Fairtrade accreditation made with grapes grown, not only organically, but to the benefit of the community as a whole.
Earthbound winemaker Heinrich Kulsen believes there is only so much you can do to influence the making of a wine. The rest is up to Mother Nature. Raised in Paarl in the Boland Heinrich considered a career in either drama or chemistry before entering wine, which is, according to some, the perfect make-up of a master winemaker. He lists working a harvest in France as a career highlight, but prefers referring to his craft as a “calling” instead of a “career”.
